Capsule endoscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic test used to examine the inner lining of the middle section of your gastrointestinal tract.
The test involves swallowing a capsule, roughly the size of a large vitamin pill, which contains a small video camera and radio transmitter. Once swallowed, the capsule naturally moves through the digestive tract, transmitting video images to a data recorder worn on your belt for an 8-hour period. The capsule is passed through your stools, usually without being noticed, and does not require retrieval.
Capsule endoscopy is a day procedure and does not require sedation. You will be instructed to avoid food after dinner the night before the test and to follow specific dietary guidelines on the day of the procedure.
