A colonoscope is a thin camera (flexible plastic tube) that is used to examine the inside lining of your large bowel (colon) and the end of your small bowel. It is used to diagnose several conditions including cancers, diverticular disease, polyps and colitis. Biopsies and/or polyps can often be taken during the examination to obtain more information.
The procedure takes around 20-30 minutes, during which patients are under a light sedation. Due to the anesthetic you will be required to have someone collect you after the colonoscopy.
